Mozart – Don Giovanni

Since its first performance in 1947 – The Bartered Bride by Smetana till now, the Varna Opera has produced more than 220 productions. Active participant in the cultural life of Varna, the Opera has successfully appeared on the national music stage with the productions of Turandot at the Salon of Arts (2003), Carmina Burana at the New Year Music Festival (2004), Aida at the Open-air Stage Festival in Sofia and Salon of Arts 2005 . The opera team has toured in many European countries, Egypt, the USA.
The Varna Opera was awarded the Varna Prize for the productions of Le nozze di Figaro, Macbeth, Don Carlos, Carmina Burana. At the National Contests in Stara Zagora, Prince Igor, Der fliegende Holländer and Simon Boccanegra were awarded. In 1995 the first stage production of the oratorio-opera Oedipus Rex by I. Stravinsky won the prize for the best premiere of the year by Allegro Vivace at the Bulgarian National Radio. In 2004 the Varna Opera-Philharmonic Society was awarded Crystal Lyre Prize by the Union of Music and Dance Figures in Bulgaria and National Center of Music and Dance.

Varna Opera celebrates the 250th Mozart’s anniversary with the performance of Don Giovanni, which premiere was within the Varna Summer International Music Festival 2005. This is the recent production of Mozart’s work in the repertoire of the Varna Opera after Entführung aus dem Serail (1952, 1973), Cosi fan tutte (1960– first production in Bulgaria, and 1996), Die Zauberflöte (1966, 1989), Le nozze di Figaro (1974).
