Since its first performance in 1947 – The Bartered Bride by Smetana till now, the
Varna Opera has staged more than 220 productions. Active participant in the cultural life of Varna, the Opera has successfully appeared on the national music stage with the productions of Turandot at the Salon of Arts (2003), Carmina Burana at the New Year Music Festival (2004), Aida at the Open-air Stage Festival in Sofia. The opera team has toured in many European countries, Egypt, the USA. The great merit for the success of the Varna Opera during the last 22 years has been the Ass. Prof. Hristo Ignatov, conductor and Opera’s director of many years and since 1999 director of the Opera Philharmonic Society – Varna.

The Varna Opera was awarded with the Varna Prize for the productions of Le nozze di Figaro, Macbeth, Don Carlos, Carmina Burana. At the National Contests in Stara Zagora, Prince Igor, Der fliegende Holländer and Simon Boccanegra were also awarded. In 1995 the first stage production of the oratorio-opera Oedipus Rex by I. Stravinsky won the prize for the best premiere of the year by Allegro Vivace at the Bulgarian National Radio. In 2004 the Opera-Philharmonic Society – Varna was awarded with the Crystal Lyre Prize – one of the most prestigious music prizes in Bulgaria.

For the first time in its 60-year long history the Varna Opera stages the Verdi’s Attila.
