Anatoly Vapirov
(1947), well-known saxophonist and unconventional
composer, is author of numerous works, integrating
various music sources. In a series of pieces, combining
free jazz improvisation and the sound of different,
mostly string chamber ensembles, he defends and
strengthens this artistic concept. Some of them became
emblematic for the contemporary Soviet music of 1970s
and 1980s.
Permanently resided in Varna, Bulgaria, Anatoly Vapirov
continues and extends this tendency of his work,
enriching the traditional sound of symphony orchestra
with folklore and jazz instruments and idiomatic
expression, using well-known and mastered by him
contemporary composing techniques.
This makes him unique in our contemporary music culture,
and may be, the only one, who combines equally his
creative and performing jazz experience with the
composition of his own larger works. Many pieces were
born this way, premiered on the stage of the Varna
Summer Festival, performed by the leading symphony
orchestras (Varna, Plovdiv, Ruse Philharmonic
Orchestras, etc.), or presented at the New Bulgarian
Music Festival, organized by the Union of Bulgarian
Composers. |
