Prof. Lyubomir
Zdravkov Georgiev /1951, Varna – 2005,
Tallahassee, Florida, USA/ remained in the history as
outstanding virtuoso cello player, as eminent pedagogue
and composer. His music is a world of endured truths,
coming from the depth of one exuberant and large
intellect.
He began playing cello in his native town with L.
Kirilov. At the Sofia School of Music he was a student
of Prof. Zdr. Yordanov and later he continued in his
class at the Bulgarian State Conservatory. There he
finished the violoncello master class with Prof. Zdr.
Yordanov and composition master class with Prof. Al.
Raychev. He was appointed concert master of the Sofia
Philharmonic Orchestra in 1978. Since then began his
extensive concert and composing activity. In 1984 he
attended the courses of the eminent American
violoncellist Prof. Janos Starker, held in Varna. Since
1987 he was his assistant at the Bloomington University
and two years later – concert master of the Sacramento
Symphony Orchestra, California. Since 1993 he was a
teacher and later – professor in violoncello and chamber
music at the Florida State University. In Varna he
performed as soloist, led master classes /1994, 2000/
and gave recitals. His work includes vocal, symphonic
and chamber pieces, among them – Concerto for
violoncello and orchestra, 1979, conducted by Dobrin
Petkov, String quartet – first prize in Dresden, 1981,
Concerto for double bass and orchestra – first prize in
Rome, 1986. As cello performer he won the first prize at
the Sv. Obretenov – 1974; second prize at the 6th
National Contest the same year, fourth prize and
laureate of Gaspar Casado in Florence – 1977, Diploma at
the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow 1978
and many others.
