Varna Boys And Youths Choir

Varna Boys and Youths Choir was founded in 1969 by Prof. Marin Chonev (1932 – 2012) – a long standing  chief conductor of the choir with an exceptional contribution to the development of boys’choral singing  in Bulgaria and for the distinguished placement/presentation at prestigious music forums in Bulgaria and abroad.



Since 1979 choir conductor is Darina Krosneva. She has worked with the choir for 40 years with the three main formations: boys, youths and mixed choir. Under her leadership the choir made a number of significant performances and was honoured with prestigious awards at national and international choral festivals and competitions. She works in professional and creative collaboration with the pianist of the choir Svetlana Panayotova.

The Choir consists of more than 100 boys and youths aged 5 to 25 years old. Its activities are    supported by the Culture Department - Municipality of Varna.

During its 50 year history, Varna Boys and Youths Choir has won significant prizes at international competitions and festivals in Bulgaria and Europe: laureate award and gold medals at Republican festivals, Grand Prix – Rostock (Germany, 1980), Honorary Diploma at the World Festival of Boys’ Choirs - Poznan (Poland, 1982), Special Prize- Delphi (Greece, 1994), the Highest prize ‘’Summa cum Laude’’- Neerpelt, Belgium – Male youth choir (1988), the Special Prize for best performance of an obligatory song for male choir and First Prize – Montreux, Switzerland – Male youth choir (1996).
Honorary diplomas at: the Association of the American Choral Conductors (1996, 2004), European Cultural Project – Hamburg, Bremen (2012), Europa Cantat – Bonn (2013), European Choral Federation – for a participation in the European Parliament, Brussel (2014),  World Peace Choral Festival – Vienna, Austria (2016), Toscana International Music Festival – Italy (2018).

The Choir had concert tours in Romania, Poland, Germany, Greece, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, Luxembourg, Italy and America.

The Choir had numerous concert performances in the frame of prestigious national forums such as: “Varna Summer” International Music Festival,  International May Choir Competition “Prof. G. Dimitrov,” “Sofia Music Weeks,” “Panorama of the  Bulgarian Choral Art”, ”First International Easter Festival, Sofia /2016/, First National Meeting of the Bulgarian Boys’ Choirs, Sofia/2017/, First National Festival of Children’s and Youths’ Choirs ,Varna/2018/, Third National Festival of New Year’s and Christmas Song , Haskovo /2018/, Thracian Choral Festival, Children and Youth Choral Gala Days ‘’Dobri Voynikov’’, Shumen.

In 2015 the Choir was awarded “VARNA” PRIZE for outstanding achievements in the art of choral singing.
The Choir has  performed together with: Zurich Boys’  Choir, Boys’Choir Cantate Domino – Belgium, Vienna Boys’ Choir, Sofia Boys Choir, Plovdiv Boys Choir , Varna Girls’ Choir, Children’s Choir “Dobri Hristov,” Mixed Choirs ‘’Morski Zvutsi’,Varna’’, “Chernomorski Zvutsi” – Balchik, Yambol Children’s Choir, Ruse Children’s and Youth Choir “Bodra Pesen,” Varna Children’s and Youth Opera Choir, Chamber Orchestra “Simfonieta”/Sinfonietta Chamber Orchestra and Varna Chamber Orchestra.

Varna Boys and Youths Choir has made 6 CDs and radio recording in the Belgian National Radio, the Swiss Radio Chablais’’, Bulgarian National Radio and Radio Varna.

The repertoire of the choir includes acapella works from all styles and periods, as well as oratorio-cantata works. The East-Orthodox chants and Bulgarian folklore music occupy an important  place in the concert programs of the young singers.
During 50 years more than 3000 boys have gone through the choir, preserved in their hearts love for the song and the difficult, but beautiful choral art.
